One of the most commonly visited and known caves in Central America is located in our beautiful country Belize. Actun Tunichil Muknal cave was once considered a “path to the underworld” by the ancient Mayan civilization that once resided in the region. This magnificent cave is located in the Cayo district, just a few miles away from San Ignacio town, along the western highway in the village of teakettle.
Actun Tunichil Muknal is quite an adventure and one of the most unique experiences, not only in Belize, but on the whole planet. The cave offers plenty to see, starting at the entrance that contains crystal clear water where you can see catfish, crayfish, and other freshwater fish. Inside the cave, you will see various ceramic artifacts, such as clay pots once used by Mayan priests who entered the cave to perform rituals. We can also see how certain rock formations can project shadows that can be perceived as silhouettes of people when illuminated. Further along the cave, in the upper chambers, we get to see human skeletal remains such as skulls and other bones which have been preserved in the cave from the Mayan sacrifices that took place long ago.
The trail towards the cave can sometimes offer sightseeing of colorful birds and occasional small Omnivores like the” lone coati” which wander around the jungle for nuts, or fruits which have fallen to the ground. Actun Tunichil Muknal cave offers great diversity and just an overall wonderful experience.
