Belize Cave Exploration

Barton Creek Cave

Information

Barton Creek is truly an adventurous cave worth visiting because of the unique way to enter and explore the cave which is done on canoes. This experience is why Barton creek is one of the top caves to visit in Belize while in the Cayo district. It is located in the jungle of the Cayo district heading towards the mountain pine ridge.

Barton creek was once used by the ancient Mayan people who used caves as places for rituals, and human sacrifices so they could worship their gods. The cave was surveyed to be around 5 miles, and along the way, there are clay pots that were used by priests. We can also see the skeletal remains of sacrifices such as skulls and other bones.

The cave also offers beautiful and unique rock formations such as the large stalagmites that cover the cave from the floor upwards to the cave roof.
