Explore the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, one of the oldest landscapes in Central America. Millions of years ago, shifting tectonic plates forced molten rock upward, transforming it into granite as it rose from the sea. Over time, exposure to wind and rain sculpted this ancient stone into the waterfalls, streams, and rivers that define the region today. Researchers have identified rock formations here dating back 340 million years — the oldest exposed rock in Central America — and the reserve is home to one of the tallest waterfalls in the region, cascading over 1,000 feet.

This full-day tour takes you through three of Mountain Pine Ridge’s most remarkable sites: Rio Frio Cave, Rio On Pools, and Big Rock Falls.

Itinerary:
After an hour’s drive from San Ignacio, we’ll arrive at the Rio Frio Cave area to begin a moderate, hour-long hike through broadleaf jungle. Along the way, your guide will point out native plants and trees, their traditional uses, and opportunities to spot local wildlife. The hike concludes at Rio Frio Cave, where your guide will share its significance to the ancient Maya before you have time to explore the cave’s chambers.

From there, we’ll drive 20 minutes to Rio On Pools, where a traditional Belizean lunch will be served. Afterward, enjoy free time to explore the pools — a stunning series of granite rock formations, cascades, and swimming holes — either taking in the views from various lookout points or cooling off with a swim.

We’ll end the day at Big Rock Falls, a 100-foot waterfall with two large pools ideal for swimming or cliff jumping from the surrounding rocks.
