The mountain Pine Ridge is one of the oldest areas of Central America. After tectonic plate movement pushed up magma and caused metamorphic changes to the granite rising from the sea, the resulting mountain, exposed to weather, created a series of waterfalls, streams, and rivers. Researchers have found rocks that are around 340 million years old, the oldest rock of Central America with one of the tallest waterfalls over a 1000 ft high. Mountain Pine Ridge was one of the first mountains to emerge from the sea and the waterfalls, creeks, and rivers created Belize’s two biggest watersheds which are The Sibun River, and the Macal and Belize River. The area being so big allows us to visit three of the most impressive destinations: Rio Frio Cave, Rio On Pools, and Big Rock Falls.
